Rien que les Heures

Rien que les Heures

I didn’t think I’d find a link between Czech film and the Alberto Cavalcanti reprospective at the festival, but I did. Vit Janacek, director of Závod ke dnu (Race to the Bottom), accompanied the Cavalcanti film Rien Que les Heures (Nothing but Time) on the piano. No photo I’m afraid (it was dark at the time!).

Umanutá is a documentary about the 81 year old film director Drahomíra Vihanová. Its a moving story about the relationship between her life and her films. She had personal setbacks that clearly affected her career. Her first film, Zabíta nedele,  was banned in 1969. The film also features her cats and her elderly Trabant car. I do have a photo of Drahomíra, in front of the screen at the Dukla Refrom cinema.

Dva nula (Two Nil). A film about football, without football.. . 22 cameras, 22 players (most of which you never see). The focus is on those at the ground watching, or not watching, a Sparta/Slavia Derby on 11 April 2011. The action switches between different groups, ground stewards, two little boys, the away fans, two Italian football tourists, a group of women fans, two businessmen in the boxes and the TV commentators. The three minutes of the game where both goals are scored is replayed from the perspective of each group. The sound quality is excellent. I’ve been trying to think how it could work for a UK audience. It would be a shame to lose the authentic voices if it was dubbed, but subtitling is a real challenge! Being football, it’s a good source of Czech swear words.See what you think of the English language trailer.
